440 km tunnel to connect Eritrea with Saudi Arabia (EP)

Pakistan and Saudi Arabia are expected to sign memoranda of understanding (MoUs) on Wednesday to extend the Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) from Pakistan to Africa through Oman and Saudi Arabia to Massawa in Eritrea.

The MoUs are planned to be signed on the conclusion of a four-day visit of Saudi delegation that arrived in Islamabad on Sunday, according to sources in Pakistan.

The plan (pictured) is to link Gwadar City in Pakistan with Muscat, the capital city of Oman, and connect Saudi Arabia industrial city of Jazan with Eritrea’s Massawa region through a 440 km tunnel across the Red Sea.

The land route between Muscat and Jazan port is around 2200km.
